National Standardized Tests: Minimum Scores Required for UT San Antonio Credit

Students are encouraged to maximize their experience at UT San Antonio by accessing the credit that can be received through prior learning experiences such as, the Advanced Placement (AP) program, College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Competency Based Exams (CBE), Dantes (DSST), International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD), and International Baccalaureate Certificate (IBC).. The following tables ­provide information on minimum scores required in order to receive credit at UT San Antonio. There are University policies that may affect whether or not credit can be received through these tests. The cutoff scores displayed on these pages are valid beginning August 1, 2026. These scores and course credits are subject to change without notice. Competency Based Exams (CBE)

Students who take and successfully pass a departmentally created Competency Based Exam will receive credit in the course for which the exam was taken. The grade of “CR” will not be included in the university grade point average, but the hours for the course will contribute to overall hours taken and count toward the minimum residence requirements.

TEEN Studio Intensive Program (COLFA School of Art) will provide credit by portfolio for up to 12 semester credit hours. The program has prepared a curriculum map to assist students in course equivalencies.  

TEEN Studio Intensive Program Year 3 & 4-COLFA Foundations II:  Art 1013 or Foundations III:  ART 1023 or (Discipline Specific courses) Basic Painting:  ART 2113 or Basic Ceramics:  Art 2613 or Basic Photography:  Art 2313 or Basic Printmaking:  Art 2413.  The maximum amount of credit to be given is 12 semester hours for Year 1 through Year 4.

By taking a UT San Antonio placement exam in selected foreign languages, students may apply for and receive retroactive credit from the Modern Languages and Literatures for selected courses in their language of study.  Retroactive credit for a course is only available if the student does not already have an equivalent AP, CLEP, or IB exam score or previous college credit for the course(s) in question.

After receiving their placement exam score, students will be contacted by the Undergraduate Advisor of Record (UGAR) for the language confirming placement.

Credit is conditional on the completion of the course into which students placed with a grade of C- or higher.  After successful completion of the course, students can earn up to a maximum of 14 retroactive credits depending on the language of study.  Students placing into and completing a 2023 course will have satisfied the requirements of the COLFA Second Language Experience.  If students are eligible for retroactive credit, it will appear on their transcript after their final grade in the course has been posted.  In most cases, the retroactive credit will be awarded during the term following course completion.

Testing is provided through Avant assessment and administered through UT San Antonio Testing Services.  Cost will be $100 for most languages; the cost for some languages may be higher. Students may retake the test once after 3 months have passed.

Students must be eligible for credit for AP U.S Government and Politics or have college credit for POL 1013 Introduction to American Politics or equivalent course prior to attempting the Competency Exam.  Students must meet the AP score or college course credit grade requirements. Students must have an AP score of 3-5 or college credit for POL 1013 or equivalent course with a grade of "A," "B," or "C".  Students who do not meet the required AP scores or grades will not be eligible to take the Competency Exam.  Passing of the exam is determined on a sliding scale in accordance with AP score and or letter grade.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Examination (IBD)

The University of Texas at San Antonio accepts credit by examination through several testing venues. In accordance with Section 51.968 of the Texas Education Code, students who receive an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma will be eligible for a minimum of 24 hours course credit if scores of “4” or better were achieved on all IB examinations attempted. Credit may also be granted for successful completion of courses given the required minimum scores below. The current articulation of how credit will be ­disseminated for standard level (SL) and higher level (HL) International Baccalaureate Diploma examinations is available below or on the Testing Services website at https://testing.utsa.edu/.
