Prerequisite: All Art Gateway courses: ART 1003, ART 1013, ART 1023, and ART 1213. This foundational course examines art education theories and practices within the context of our diverse society, exploring the relationship between schools, culture, and equity. Students analyze educational philosophies, learning theories, and the historical construction of schooling through lenses of ethnicity, gender, and class. ARTE 4013. Elementary Art Education Methods and Pedagogy. (3-0) 3 Credit Hours.

Prerequisite: ARTE 2313, declared Art Education major, and advisor approval. This course examines curricular, instructional, and management methods for teaching art in elementary settings, with emphasis on child development and diverse learning contexts. Students develop age-appropriate instructional strategies, focusing on materials, techniques, and curriculum sequencing while integrating technology and multimedia approaches. Course content includes assessment design, teaching special populations, and fostering positive classroom culture. This course must be completed with a grade of “B-” or better for it to serve as a prerequisite for CI 4716. Field experience required. Generally offered: Fall, Spring. Not offered in the Summer. ARTE 4114. Media, Materials, and Techniques for Art Education Lab. (0-12) 4 Credit Hours.

Prerequisite: ARTE 2313, and declared Art Education major. Students will focus on developing skills for teaching art across educational settings, emphasizing hands-on exploration of materials, techniques, and technologies. Students learn age-appropriate media management, planning strategies, and technology integration for production and assessment in diverse classroom environments. ARTE 4303. Topics in Criticism and Dialogue in Art Education. (3-0) 3 Credit Hours.

Prerequisite: ARTE 2313, ARTE 4013, ARTE 4114, and CI 4283. This is a Topics course in Art Theory and Practice. This course serves as an individualized study exploring current trends in field-based arts education, research, and practice. Students research a specific topic and present a written and oral analysis of their findings. Research topics may include: Research in Approaches to Art Education; Classroom to Community: Project-Based Learning Experiences; Knowing Your Community; Arts Integration Across the Curriculum; Art as a Language; Pedagogy in Art Criticism, History, and Aesthetics.
